on December 3rd, 2024, Sunrise announced during the Gundam Conference Winter 2024 livestream, the trailer for the upcoming Gundam production: Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX (pronounced “Gquacks”).
This marks the first time a Gundam project is also being co-produced by studio Khara known for the recent Evangelion films. When the production was announced I had to check the staff involved and as the title suggests, it is PACKED! We have Yoji Enokido of Revolutionary Girl Utena and Hideaki Anno of Neon Genesis Evangelion as the screenwriters. Take, who is known for her designs of various characters from the Pokemon Franchise from Sun and Moon to the Trading Card Games is the lead character designer for this series, bringing in unique designs with an amazing art style. Ikuto Yamashita, known for the mechanical designs from Gunbusters, Nadia: The secret of Blue Water, and Neon Genesis Evangelion, is involved with the designs of the various Mobile Suits both old and new that are briefly seen in the trailer and promotional material.
Just to name a few of the amazing staff involved, we even have Tomoyo Kurosawa (Land of the Lustrous, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, One Piece) voicing the main lead, Amate Yuzuriha. There’s also the amazing Yui Ishikawa (Attack on Titan, Violet Evergarden, Nier: Automata) as the voice of the dueteragonist, Nyaan. The final voice actor announced is Shimba Tsuchiya (Haikyu!!, Sanrio Boys) as Shuji Itō.
There is a lot of interesting visuals from the trailer unveiled at the conference, from the setting inside of a station with a day/night cycle, our characters, mentions of clan battles, police themed Zaku’s, and Haro with a beanie! I repeat, Haro with a beanie (this is not a drill!). The official site also hints that the events of Gundam GQuuuuuuX is set in a branch timeline from Gundam 0079 where Char gains access to the Mobile Suit Gundam and has the Principality of Zeon win the war against the Earth federation. So I am curious to see the state of the universe in this timeline set after the original series.
The production and overall look and feel of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX has me eager to see how it will pan out, especially after following up the popular Witch From Mercury series that ended in 2023. With how well received and how Witch from Mercury introduced many new fans to the Gundam franchise, I am confident that with all who are involved with this production, and how word about it is spreading throughout social media, that a new generation of Gundam fans will soon be upon us. Plus, Haro in a Beanie, I only knew him for a few hours and I have been won over.
