Back in 2023, The LEGO Group renewed its commitment to sustainability with a science-backed plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within production. This year, the company plans to expand its investment in renewable energy, building towards its 2050 net zero goal.
The year 2050 feels like a lifetime away, so The LEGO Group is taking smaller, more digestible steps to reduce its current GHG emissions. By expanding its solar power initiatives, the company hopes to reduce emissions by 37% by 2032, compared to 2019’s baseline.
The LEGO Group grew its global solar capacity by over 61% in two years. While this only accounts for roughly 4% of the company’s total energy consumption, the brand plans to expand capacity even more, on track to reach 72% by the end of 2025.

That’s why by 2025 we will have doubled our spending on sustainability initiatives versus 2023 and we’re constantly looking for new ways to minimise our environmental impact. Emissions reduction isn’t linear, but our commitment to the urgent task is unwavering. Our investments in sustainable materials, manufacturing technology, and supply chain improvements will help us hit our 2032 science-based target and reach net zero by 2050, as we continue to grow and deliver on our mission to inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow.”
Developments to achieve this lofty goal are already underway. Solar panels and energy parks are being installed at The LEGO Group facilities around the world, including Hungary, Vietnam, and The LEGO Group’s headquarters in Billund, Denmark. The company will also explore and experiment with other energy-saving technologies like battery storage to further diversify its renewable energy usage.
Due to increased demand and investments in new appliances, The LEGO Group’s GHG emissions have risen since the plan’s announcement. However, The LEGO Group continues to play the long game. Many of the new machines introduced environmentally-friendly initiatives to the production line, including paper-based packaging and energy-efficient molding machines, which will play a vital role in future emission reductions.
