Mattel Honors Dr. Opal Lee with New Barbie Doll

To celebrate Black History Month, Mattel is launching a new doll for activist Dr. Opal Lee. As part of the Barbie Inspiring Women Series, this collectible commemorates her efforts to raise awareness about Juneteenth. 

On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Texas were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. At the age of 89, Lee took action by walking from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., to symbolize the time it took for emancipation to reach enslaved African Americans in Texas. Her commitment to raising awareness was a key factor in making Juneteenth a recognized federal holiday in 2021. 

Mattel honors and preserves Lee’s legacy with a new Barbie Inspiring Women doll. This collectible captures Lee’s likeness during her courageous walk and wears a blue Unity Unlimited Opal’s Walk for Freedom t-shirt. The doll completes her civil rights advocate look with glasses, white pants, and sneakers. This Barbie comes in a commemorative window box that tells her inspiring story on the back.
