Dedicated to building a better tomorrow, The LEGO Group is pledging millions in additional funding to its sustainability strategies, specifically targeting carbon removal.
In partnership with Climate Impact Partners and ClimeFi, the company has already committed DKK 36 million to four projects, each testing the efficacy of different carbon removal methods and their effects on the wider climate. Now, The LEGO Group is renewing its investment with another DKK 18 million, bringing its total contributions to DKK 54 million.
“This purchase highlights our commitment to testing a broad range of credible pathways for nature and tech-based carbon removal,” said Annette Stube, Chief Sustainability Officer at The LEGO Group. “As the programme expands, it is helping to strengthen our understanding of different approaches and inform future decision-making on how carbon removal may complement our wider climate goals. While reducing emissions in our own operations remains our priority, this programme allows us to work with expert partners and contribute to solutions that may help scale effective climate action over time.”
In addition to the core four projects, The LEGO Group and ClimeFi are also experimenting with three of the latest innovations in carbon-reduction technology: Biomass geological storage, or the injection of carbon-rich waste deep underground; Mineralization, a process that transforms carbon dioxide and reactive waste materials into limestone for building; and Marine carbon dioxide removal, which converts CO₂ into inorganic carbon for long-term storage in the ocean, therefore removing excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Given its global network of operations, the LEGO Group’s expanded investment enables it to make a difference in local communities worldwide by backing existing regional projects, such as the Quintana Roo Restoration Project in Mexico. Originally developed by Canopia Carbon, this large-scale reforestation initiative aims to revive the degrading 14,000-hectare forest and support the families that call it home. The LEGO Group and Climate Impact Partners’ continued patronage helps open to door to species recovery, fire prevention, and community engagement programs, as well as generating employment and other social benefits.
