Mattel Reveals 80th Anniversary Art Exhibit

Mattel is continuing its ongoing 80th anniversary celebrations with the Toys As Art, Art Inspired By Toys: Mattel’s 80th Anniversary Group Exhibition at the Corey Helford Gallery in downtown Los Angeles.

The exhibit, which is hosted under Mattel’s Mattel Creations brand, features more than 80 artists displaying their own takes on some of Mattel’s most iconic brands, including Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, American Girl, Thomas & Friends, Uno, Masters of the Universe, Matchbox, Monster High, MEGA, Polly Pocket, and more. Some artists in the exhibit include Mark Ryden, Paul Frank, Gary Baseman, D*Face, and more. You can also get a glimpse into Mattel’s history with the Mattel Creations space in Gallery 3.

Since its founding by Ruth and Elliott Handler, Mattel has been a creations company, powered by artists, designers, and trailblazers. As we celebrate our 80th anniversary, it’s only natural we would collaborate with artists to reimagine our iconic brands, where our toys become a canvas for their art. This partnership between Mattel Creations and Corey Helford Gallery is an exciting invitation for the world to join us in celebrating the unique intersection between art, toys, and imagination.”

Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer, Mattel

While the exhibit features big-name artists, Mattel also invited four students from Inner-City Arts to showcase their work at the show: Iris Kim, Kiera Evans, Madeline Chae, and Marilyn Garcia.

The exhibit opens this Saturday, March 15, with a reception from 7-11 p.m. PT. After that, the exhibit will be on view until April 19. The Corey Helford Gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday from 12-6 p.m.

Alongside exhibit showings, the Corey Helford Gallery will host three events over the month, including a meet and greet with Gary Baseman featuring his UNO deck in the exhibit, a panel discussion where artists will discuss their favorite Mattel toys and their creative process, and a workshop with Case Kenny.
