On social media, DC Studios co-CEO (and new Superman movie director) James Gunn posted a teaser poster for next year’s Supergirl film, giving us the first official photo of Milly Alcock as the woman of tomorrow:
Now, a description of the ending of Superman follows, so in case you haven’t seen it and mind being spoiled, please skip ahead: The poster’s release comes almost a week after the release of Superman, which introduced Alcock’s Kara Zor-El at the end of the film, stumbling drunk into the Fortress of Solitude to collect her dog, Krypto. The poster shows Supergirl in her costume from the scene, complete with a trench coat over her traditional outfit (an element inspired by the first issue of the film’s source material, Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.)
The poster, where graffiti (presumably sprayed by Kara) transforms Superman‘s tagline “Look up” to “Look out,” also reflects how the new DCU’s Supergirl is a much more disconcerting person than her cousin. In an interview with ScreenRant, Gunn commented Kara is “a total mess. I mean, I think as we learn, she’s had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background. He’s had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she’s ended up different than her cousin.”
In further DCU news this week, in a breakdown of Superman‘s opening weekend, Variety mentioned in passing that a Wonder Woman reboot (which Gunn had confirmed was being written beforehand) is being fast-tracked thanks to the film’s box office performance. However, neither it or Supergirl will be the DCU’s first female-led project: that honor goes to HBO Max’s Creature Commandos, which stars Indira Varma as the voice of the Bride of Frankenstein.
Meanwhile, HBO’s The Penguin racked up seven nominations from the Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Lead Actor (in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie) for Colin Farrell, and Outstanding Lead Actress for Cristin Milioti. While part of Matt Reeves‘s The Batman universe instead of Gunn and Peter Safran‘s DCU, it still indicates things are (indeed) looking up for DC Studios. The winners will be announced on September 14.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl will be released on June 26, 2026, and follow Kara as she accompanies the young alien girl Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley) on a planet-hopping quest to avenge her father’s murder. The film will co-star Matthias Schoenaerts as the killer, Krem of the Yellow Hills, Jason Momoa as bounty hunter Lobo, David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Kara’s parents Zor-El and Alura, and last but not least, Krypto.
It marks the first Supergirl movie since the 1984 film starring Helen Slater, although we should note the character was for all intents and purposes the protagonist of 2023’s animated DTV film Legion of Super-Heroes (where she was voiced by Meg Donnelly), and that she was portrayed on the big screen for the second time by Sasha Calle in that year’s Flash movie. Incidentally, the movie’s release will come five years after the end of the TV show starring Melissa Benoist, which ran from October 26, 2015, to November 9, 2021.
