A wintry woodland tale from the ‘80s is heading back to shelves in an all-new format.
Candy Jar Books, an independent UK publishing house, is reimagining the Canadian classic The Christmas Raccoons as an illustrated storybook for the first time — nearly 45 years after the television special initially aired. Launching just in time for the holidays, this title invites both new and nostalgic fans to the Evergreen Forest to re-experience the festive, furry fun that kick-started the long-running animated series.
In this heartwarming story, Bert Raccoon and his crew of critters are caroling on Christmas Eve when they discover something troubling — Cyril Sneer is cutting down all the trees! Enlisting the help of Ranger Dan and his family, the Raccoons must work together to catch the tree thief, stop the deforestation, and learn the true meaning of the holidays. From colorful, retro-inspired illustrations and QR-code music videos to its timeless themes, this read-aloud cements The Raccoons as a truly evergreen franchise.
“It’s incredible to see the magic of the Evergreen Forest alive and well forty-five years later,” said Kevin Gillis, the writer-producer behind The Raccoons series. “The Christmas Raccoons was where it all started, and it’s wonderful that a whole new generation can experience the magic, humor, and heart of these characters in this beautifully illustrated storybook.”
Candy Jar Books acquired the rights to The Raccoons back in 2024, becoming the first to translate the woodland crew’s animated adventures into children’s books. The Christmas Raccoons joins three other tales from the forest: Cry Wolf!, The One That Got Away, and Blast from the Past!.
Beyond the storybook, families continue to revisit the classic series. Restored and remastered Raccoons specials continue to air in more than 40 countries on a variety of streaming services, including Roku, BritBox, ITVX, Crave, and most recently, Pluto UK.
The Christmas Raccoons is available now worldwide on Amazon, as well as at local bookstores throughout the U.K. For more information about the title, visit Candy Jar Books’ website.
