This LEGO Willy Wonka Set Is So Sweet

The LEGO Group is teaming up with Warner Bros. for a candy-coated kit inspired by the classic 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. 

Inspired by the iconic tunnel scene, this building kit takes families on a float down the chocolate river, complete with familiar faces, interactive details, and treats galore. The set, designed by Italian duo Roberto Ceruti and Jody Padulano, is the latest addition to the LEGO Ideas line, a community-led program that allows LEGO lovers to vote on their favorite fan-made creations to become real sets. It will be available online and in stores Sept. 18.

This whimsical, 2,025-piece display features authentic details from the film, like candy cane trees, lollipop plants, the Wonkatania boat, Wonka’s secret office, and a chocolate waterfall that flows with the turn of a dial. Fans can recreate their favorite scenes with nine minifigures, including Willy Wonka, two Oompa Loompas, Charlie Bucket, Grandpa Joe, and all the other Golden Ticket winners. If Augustus Gloop wanders too close to the river, don’t worry! The set includes a swappable face for him, covered in scrumptious chocolate.  

“Our inspiration came from the nostalgia and innocence of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory — it simply had to become a LEGO set,” say Ceruti and Padulano. “The build took about four to five months, starting with the iconic movie scene. Thanks to new LEGO pieces, we could update the design and overcome challenges like perfecting the bridge and balancing the candy tree’s look. Adding a motorized waterfall made the set truly special.” 

The LEGO Ideas Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory will launch Sept. 18 for $219.99, but there’s a sweet surprise in store! LEGO Insiders will have a golden ticket for early access, starting as early as Sept. 15.
